The word ‘coworking’ did not exist when the first ever hackerspace, C-base, opened in Berlin in 1995. This community C-base offered a physical location where people could meet and work and was created based around coworking principles;
- A collection of like-minded people with similar interests and values
- Emphasis on community
- Space available for coworking and events
Today – we still identify with the same values here at The Tara Building as this first coworking space and infact our culture is much more closely aligned to this, than many of our competitors, and we are extremely proud of that. We have never lost sight of the need to create a space that attracts a like minded audience who share that feeling of community.
Here at The Tara Building, the whole emphasis of the building inside and out is designed to enhance collaboration and friendship.
So how does a coworker differ from a corporate employee?
Compared to corporate employees, who in many instances still are expected to show up in the office space within normal working hours, many of the people who make use of The Tara Building coworking spaces have the flexibility to work wherever and whenever they want. We attract people who work work independently and with less hierarchy.
It’s fair to say that our Members are accountable for their own projects, progress and work. Compared to the corporate offices there is less direct competition, internal politics – the coworking space gives them the room to be themselves and concentrate on their own productivity. Recently though, we’ve seen more interest from Corporate business open to allowing their employees to work full or part-time from a coworking space and this is a trend we see set to continue, as we return to the ‘new normal’.

Coworking spaces as perceived as places of imagination and creativity
Coworkers use The Tara Building in a different way to a Corporate Office.
